Just a few years ago, it seemed as if the trend towards ever bigger engines would go on inexorably. Cars were becoming larger and heavier, with engine capacities increasing in tandem.
But there’s been a dramatic U-turn recently, driven by rising oil prices and heightened environmental concerns. Motorists and manufacturers alike are no longer big on oversized engines for the mass market.
Volvo seems well placed in these rational times, thanks to a spanking new turbocharged 1.6-litre engine ready to do yeoman service in several key models. Its successful local launch of the Volvo V60 T4 has been quickly followed by the Volvo S80 here, using the same 1596cc unit that qualifies for a considerably cheaper Category A COE.
Such a small engine in a large executive saloon sounds slow already, but the new motor acquits itself extremely well – helped by the fact that the 1627kg S80 is just 45kg heavier than the smaller V60.
The new engine is pretty high-tech. It has direct injection, with centrally situated six-hole injectors ensuring maximum efficiency with minimal emissions. Turbocharging, plus variable valve timing for both inlet and exhaust valves, mean a strong output of 180bhp power and 240Nm torque (with overboost to 270Nm briefly).
All this translates into a decent zero to 100km/h timing of 9.2 seconds and a top speed of 220km/h. A good spread of torque ensures that throttle response is not lethargic. The engine has a free-revving nature, with no trace of harshness even at the redline. Just don’t expect an inspirational engine/exhaust note.
Although it is the base model in Volvo’s S80 range, the T4 is well equipped. Items include a premium 4 x 40W audio system with eight speakers, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, brushed aluminium inlays, 17-inch wheels and rain-sensing wipers.
The more astute will notice the absence of speed-sensitive power steering. Steering feel is therefore a little vague and turn-in response could be sharper. This is an executive car, though, not a sports saloon. After all, the Volvo S80 still provides decent ride comfort together with fail-safe handling.
Not a new design by now, the Volvo S80 continues to hold its age well. It is a handsome car with enough presence to make the neighbours envious. As appealing as ever is the cabin’s chic, minimalist Scandinavian design with superb ergonomics. The floating centre console, a Volvo highlight, is practical and stylish.
If you’re in the market for an executive saloon that looks the part but is relatively inexpensive to run, the Volvo S80 T4 should merit serious consideration.
The Volvo S80 T4 is quick enough to be interesting, yet costs a reasonable $188,000 with COE. And it would also boost your green credentials along the way.
