The Hyundai i45 is definitely a feasible alternative to the ever-popular Toyota Camry. Its main draws are its roomy cabin and composed ride, which pamper the driver and passengers alike. Against its rivals here, however, the drive isn’t very inspiring and the comparative lack of on-board goodies (at least in base spec as tested) is a disadvantage. Fortunately, Hyundai agent Komoco Motors has indicated that a better-equipped i45 is in the pipeline.
Delivering on its promise of driving entertainment is the Suzuki Kizashi K-Sport, thanks largely to its potent motor. But in this company, the car’s interior space is inadequate and its price tag is daunting, the latter encumbered further by the higher fuel and road tax charges of the larger 2.4-litre engine.
The Kia Optima lacks the i45’s gentle comfort and the Kizashi’s capable handling, but it more than compensates with its eye-catching “European” design, delightful cockpit and premium aspirations. By doing most things right and very little wrong, the Optima is probably the most desirable of these “unusual suspects”.
