The robust charms of the ML350 are attractive in their own right, but have a limited appeal due to the car’s age (which shows in the cabin) and ride quality. We’re looking forward to its successor, which should deliver the high level of refinement expected of a Mercedes-Benz.
Continuing to set the benchmark for luxury soft-roaders is Lexus’ RX350, which offers a truly cultured driving experience. As good as its manners are, however, the RX needs the edginess that hallmarks SUVs to really complete its package, which is still skewed towards outright on-road comfort. It needs a bit of wildness to balance out its Zen-like calm.
Making the strongest case for itself in this regard is the latest Volkswagen Touareg. Despite its powerful off-road skills (proven in Dakar rallies), it remains pliant and practical when driven in our largely urban landscape. It is this ability to conquer both the concrete jungle and the real jungle that gives the Touareg an edge over its rivals in this story.
