When it comes to continental mass-market hatchbacks, few have been able to match the all-round appeal of the Volkswagen Golf. Known for its practicality, driveability and value for money, this model is now into its seventh generation. The German automaker claims that today’s Golf is a near-premium product that delivers even better performance while boasting advanced new features.
Also offering more goodies than ever before is Citroen’s facelifted C4. Making a return to Singapore after a two-year absence, the C4 has been given a more elegant exterior, a more practical interior and greater refinement.
The C4’s mechanical cousin is the Peugeot 308, which is the largest hatch here. Despite its size, the 308 is said to feature improvements in handling and economy, thanks to a body made lighter in last year’s model update.
Targeting keener drivers is the Opel Astra, which is equipped with a muscular engine. Aside from its powertrain, this other German “Golf” also boasts enjoyable infotainment and clever storage ideas.
Faced with such stiff competition, can the Golf continue its reign as Singapore’s favourite European hatchback? Or, will it have to move aside for one of these capable rivals? Continue reading to discover how the “establishment” fares.
