Volkswagen has unveiled the e-BULLI concept, an all-electric minibus from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV).
CLASSIC MODERN
The Volkswagen e-BULLI concept is based on a T1 Samba Bus. However, it is equipped with the drive system components of the latest VW electric vehicles.
The original bus was produced in 1966 and one example has been comprehensively restored for use on the concept car.
VWCV’s partner eClassics is planning to offer T1 conversions in the style of the new Volkswagen e-BULLI to European customers.
NEW POWER
The original 42bhp 4-cylinder boxer engine has been swopped for an electric motor delivering 81bhp. Maximum torque meanwhile, has increased to 211Nm, twice as much as the original engine’s 101Nm.
Power transmission is by means of a single-speed gearbox, which allows the Volkswagen e-BULLI to reach an electronically limited top speed of 128km/h.
The lithium-ion battery meanwhile, has a usable energy capacity of 45kWh. Charging via a 50kW direct current charger will allow the battery to reach 80% capacity in 40 minutes.
The range with a full battery charge is over 200km.
The Volkswagen e-BULLI concept also receives multi-link front and rear axles with adjustable shock absorbers and coilovers. It will also have a new rack-and-pinion steering system and four internally ventilated disc brakes.
A REVIVED INTERIOR
On the interior, a new speedometer integrates a two-digit display into the original design. A multitude of further information is shown via a tablet integrated into the roof console.
The Volkswagen e-BULLI driver can also call up information online. This is done using a smartphone app or via a PC using Volkswagen “We Connect”. The app lets the driver see information such as remaining charge time, current range, miles travelled, trip times, energy consumption and recuperation.
Music on board the Volkswagen e-BULLI comes from an authentic-looking retro-style radio, which is equipped with cutting edge technology such as DAB+, Bluetooth and USB.
The radio is linked to a sound system with out-of-sight components including an active subwoofer.
