Volkswagen Group Components has revealed a new video preview of its prototype mobile charging robot. The robot is designed to provide autonomous recharging of vehicles in restricted parking areas like underground car parks.
The robot is capable of independently opening the socket flap of the car as well as connecting and decoupling the charging plug.
It facilitates charging in tight parking spaces by carrying around a mobile energy storage unit, which stays with the vehicle and provides the charging power. This strategy allows the Volkswagen charging robot to move along and look for other electric vehicles to plug in.
Once the car has been charged up, the robot will independently return to collect the mobile energy storage unit and take it back to a central station.
