Bicycle users will now have access to more parking spaces, marked with a bright yellow border, near seven MRT stations.
The stations are Punggol, Hougang, Paya Lebar, Khatib, Sembawang, Pioneer and Lakeside.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) shared on its Facebook page yesterday that the initiative will provide some 750 extra spaces for both bicycle owners and those who use rented bicycles.
By next year, LTA will have also installed 1900 more bicycle racks islandwide, it said in the post.
The Straits Times understands the seven MRT stations were chosen because they have the highest demand for bicycle-parking spaces, according to site observations and feedback.
Punggol MRT station, which had 325 parking spaces before the addition, grabbed the lion’s share of new spaces.
If there is demand, the LTA said more bicycle-parking zones, which make use of unoccupied state land, may be rolled out in the future.
The authority said it will continue to increase bicycle-parking capacity at various public transport nodes, such as bus interchanges.
At present, all train stations have bicycle-parking facilities, which include racks and stands.
In addition, the LTA will work with bicycle-sharing operators, which do not have their own docking stations, to incentivise their users to park responsibly.
“We would like to remind all cyclists that strict enforcement action will be taken against all indiscriminately parked bicycles,” it added in its Facebook post.
The reminder follows news reports on the lack of parking spaces, amid the spike in popularity of bike-sharing schemes.
Last Tuesday, Chinese bike-share company Mobike officially launched its service, joining two other providers operating here – China-based ofo and local venture oBike.
In a statement yesterday, Mobike said it welcomed LTA’s move, adding that the new zones “are a highly cost-effective way to support the growth of cycling in Singapore”.
