The all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan is now officially available in Singapore.
Two variants are currently available at Cycle & Carriage – the C180 and the C200, which can be specified with either Avantgarde or AMG Line trims.
Both models have turbocharged 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. The C200, of course, has the more powerful version of this powertrain.
A plug-in hybrid model called the C300e, which has a pure electric range of up to 100km, will arrive later this year.
Prices for the new C-Class currently start from $247,888 with COE.
NEW LOOK, LARGER BODY
The C-Class bears a resemblance to the S-Class, although the latter’s grille is much larger than the former. All C-Class models have bonnets with “power domes”, and the windscreen and passenger cell have been moved backwards.
Both the C180 and C200 are available in either Avantgarde or AMG Line specification. The latter is particularly striking, as it comes with a “starry” grille made up of 200 stars (201 including the main one).
Inside, the C-Class’ cockpit mimics that of the S-Class. Its second-generation Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) features a 12.3-inch display for the instrument panel and a tablet-like 11.9-inch screen for the infotainment system. A 64-colour mood lighting system is standard.
The digitised cockpit can be further upgraded with an optional heads-up display. However, unlike the S-Class, which can be had with a heads-up display with augmented reality for navigation, the C-Class does not have the space to accommodate this hardware.
Passenger space has grown, though. As expected, the new car is larger than before, boasting a 65mm increase in overall length and a 25mm longer wheelbase, which now measures 2865mm.
Correspondingly, the C-Class now offers more passenger space, with improvements not just to the legroom, but headroom and elbow room as well. The 455-litre boot capacity, however, remains unchanged.
NEW ELECTRIFIED POWERTRAINS
A new turbocharged 1.5-litre inline-4 equipped with a 48-volt mild hybrid system and integrated starter-generator features in the C180 and C200. It is paired to Mercedes’ own 9G-Tronic (9-speed automatic transmission).
In C180 guise, the drivetrain delivers 168hp (170PS) and 250Nm, with a 0-100km/h time of 8.6 seconds. For the C200, the motor delivers 201hp (204PS) and 300Nm, along with a century sprint time of 7.3 seconds. Both models are VES-neutral.
Set to join the range later this year is the C300e, a plug-in hybrid. Its turbocharged 2-litre engine, which is paired with an electric motor, provides a combined 308hp (230kW) and propels the car from rest to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds.
When the C300e’s 25.4kWh lithium-ion battery is fully charged, it allows the car to be driven up to 100km on electricity alone.
