The new BMW 4 Series Coupe has just been unveiled and it’s a shocker. Its kidney grille, which is already polarising opinions, seems like the largest one BMW has ever made.
But no matter how you feel about it, the fact remains that the 4 Series Coupe doesn’t look like any other BMW in the range. In fact, it doesn’t look like any other car on the road.
Perhaps BMW wanted to ensure that the 4 Series wouldn’t be a “baby 8 Series”. Maybe they just wanted the car to have road presence. Well, they have definitely succeeded.
NEW DIMENSIONS
The new BMW 4 Series is the biggest one to date. Compared to its predecessor, the latest model is 128mm longer, 27mm wider and 6mm taller. Its wheelbase, which is now 41mm longer, bodes well for interior space.
To enhance handling, the new BMW 4 Series Coupe’s centre of gravity and rear track are 21mm lower and 23mm wider compared to those of the 3 Series Sedan.
The Coupe’s weight distribution is perfectly balanced, too.
HANDLING EQUIPMENT
Apart from a lower centre of gravity and balanced weight distribution, the BMW 4 Series Coupe can be further outfitted with the optional M Sport suspension.
The M Sport suspension includes firmer dampers, anti-roll bars and variable sport steering.
Other options include adaptive M Sport suspension with electronic dampers, and the M Sport differential, which has a fully variable locking function in the rear differential.
DIGITISED CABIN
Like its siblings, the BMW 4 Series Coupe features a high-tech interior with digital displays.
The standard Live Cockpit Plus features a black panel instrument cluster surrounding a 5.1-inch colour display, along with an 8.8-inch Control Display and Touch Controller.
Specify the optional Live Cockpit Professional and the 4 Series Coupe gets fitted with a larger 12.3-inch screen for the instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch display for the infotainment.
If you happen to be an IT geek, there’s still a long list of optional safety features and driving assistance functions for you to peruse.
AVAILABILITY
The latest BMW 4 Series Coupe is scheduled to reach Singapore in the fourth quarter of this year. Official agent Performance Motors will sell the 184hp 420i and 258hp 430i variants. The 430i M Sport Edition Pro will be marketed as the top-end model.
Outside of Singapore, the range-topping model is the M440i xDrive. BMW won’t be bringing in the M440i because it would be priced too close to the M4 when the latter eventually arrives.
Prices for the 4 Series Coupe are expected to range from $220,000 to $250,000.
