Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the Vision EQXX, an all-electric hyper-efficient saloon with a claimed 1000km range.
HYPER EFFICIENCY
The astonishing range is supposedly possible thanks to the concept car’s 100kWh battery.
Developed by the Formula 1 experts at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in the UK, the battery has an energy density of 400kW/L.
This allows it to be 50% smaller and 30% lighter than the battery in the Mercedes-Benz EQS, and to fit within the compact body of the Vision EQXX.
There’s also a super-efficient drivetrain underneath the concept car. With a total power output of 201bhp, the high-efficiency allows Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX to convert up to 95% of the energy supplied by the battery into forward motion.
For comparison, this figure is close to 30% for most internal-combustion engines.
All these innovations give the concept car a claimed energy consumption of more than 10km/kWh.
To further aid efficiency, the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX also sports 117 solar cells on its roof.
These cells help power auxiliaries including the air-conditioning fan and cabin lights. They are said to be able to add up to 25km of range in a day under ideal conditions.
FUTURISTIC DESIGN
Then there’s that exterior design. With a drag coefficient of just 0.17Cd, the sleek form of the Mercedes-Benz EQXX allows it to cut right through the air. Up front, the car’s features a sports car-like shape, with a minimal frontal area.
The front bumper of the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX is utilised as an air curtain, directinh air into the curtains fore of the front wheels to reduce aerodynamic turbulence from the tyres.
Further up rests a horizontal light band alongside a gloss-black grille with rose-gold highlights.
The Mercedes star above the grille is now a two-dimensional affair, a design touch that is said to also feature on future vehicles from the firm.
And at the rear, the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX gets a cleanly defined, aerodynamically effective tear-off edge. Punctuated by rear light clusters, the rear of the car also features a retractable rear diffuser, which deploys at higher speeds.
STUNNING USER EXPERIENCE
Step inside the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX and you’ll find plenty to entertain all on that 1000km journey.
To start, there’s a seamless 47.5-inch display that takes the place of the dashboard.
Said to deliver never before seen graphics and a highly adaptive design, the system also sports a star-cloud avatar that will shape-shift in response to the driver’s needs while taking care of the passengers.
Two broadband speakers installed in each headrest are paired with a bass exciter in each seat, allowing the creation of multiple different sound zones.
Mercedes states this audio system design also reduces the total number of speakers needed in the cabin, reducing its total energy drain.
