The new Mercedes-Benz GLE is now available in Singapore.
The German carmaker’s GLE model is the SUV within the E-Class model range. It’s closest rival would be the BMW X5.
The GLE was previously known as the Mercedes-Benz M-Class. However, Mercedes has been rationalising its SUV models over the past years.
It’s now easy to tell how big one of their SUVs are based on the last letter of the model designation.
For instance, the GLA is based on the A-Class and the GLC, on the C-Class.
WHAT’S NEW IN THE MERCEDES-BENZ GLE?
Well for starters, it is bigger and offers more space than its predecessor.
The latest Mercedes-Benz GLE has a wheelbase that’s a massive 80mm longer than before. Backseat passengers now get 69mm more legroom.
For taller occupants, headroom has also increased by 35mm.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE also features the German brand’s latest dashboard and MBUX infotainment system, which utilises artificial intelligence.
For load-hauling purposes, the boot offers 825 litres with the rear seats in place and 2055 litres with the rear backrests folded.
The aperture has also been widened by 72mm to make loading/unloading bulky items easier.
NOW HOW ABOUT SAFETY FEATURES?
The Mercedes-Benz GLE has a raft of safety features, which include Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Brake Assist.
The body is also built using high-strength steel. This has made the new GLE 20 percent more torsionally rigid than its predecessor.
HOW FAST CAN IT GO?
The initial model launched in Singapore is the GLE450. It is propelled by a turbocharged 3-litre inline-6 that has a 48-volt mild hybrid system.
The GLE450’s engine delivers 367hp and 500Nm of torque, and will do the century sprint in 5.7 seconds.
This is quick enough not just to see off most SUVs, but hot hatches, too.
CAN IT GO OFF-ROAD?
The Mercedes-Benz GLE does have 4Matic (all-wheel-drive) with variable torque distribution.
However, you’ll still need something more serious if it’s a real off-roading you wish to do.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The new Mercedes-Benz GLE450 starts at $370,888 including COE (and after $20,000 VES surcharge).
