TrichoKare Special
Hit by pangs of worry whenever you notice more hair falling as you run your hands through your hair? Trichologist Jane Ang from TK TrichoKare identifies what causes hair loss and what can be done to tackle it.
Genetics aside, many physical factors can pose threats to our pride and joy. But these little bugbears can be easily managed with a conscious effort. With more than 12 years of experience in hair and scalp issues, Jane gives the low-down on combating hair loss.
Hot, hot heat
Tropical Singapore’s hot all year, and often as steamy as a sous vide, which means lots of sweat even from that walk to the bus stop. “While perspiration might not be the direct cause of scalp and hair problems,” says Jane, “overactive sebaceous glands can lead to excess sebum production. The build-up of this and other impurities can clog our hair follicles.”
Try this
This is pretty obvious – wash your hair daily to remove dirt and any excess sebum suffocating your hair follicles.
Smoking
In addition to the ill effects of smoking on your body, you age faster, too. Besides getting wrinkles sooner, toxic chemicals in smoking can damage the DNA in hair follicles, says Jane. “As people age, their rate of hair growth slows.” Which explains why smokers often have thinner crops of hair.
Try this
Where possible, give smoking a wide berth.
Are you Using the Wrong Shampoo?
“Unsuitable hair products could strip moisture from your hair and scalp, which makes it harder for follicles to absorb nutrients. Taking care of your scalp is important to healthy hair growth,” shares Jane.
Try this
Change your shampoo if you notice itchiness, dandruff (you know, those flakes in-between your hair or on your shoulder), greasy hair and hair fall. When in doubt, consult a trichologist for advice.
Stress Factors
“Stress is responsible for your body chemistry changes,” says Jane. “It is not the direct cause of hair and scalp problems, but it’s the reason for disturbing your hormone levels.” For example, a study by the New York University found that stress causes stem cell loss. In hair, this means a loss in melanocytes, the pigment that gives hair its colour, turning it white. Stress can also affect your skin, increasing sebum and oil production, clogging the hair follicles. Think acne breakout, but instead of zits on your scalp, you experience hair loss.
