Buyers looking for a ridiculously quick SUV to ferry their families around in now have two more options to consider.
The BMW X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition are the top variants in their respective lineups. Prices start at $600,888.
POWER AND PERFORMANCE
Beneath each of their enormous bonnets lies an equally huge engine: a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8.
Said motor produces 625hp and 750Nm of mountain-shifting torque. It’s paired to an 8-speed automatic and M xDrive, BMW’s M-specific all-wheel-drive system.
These figures enable both the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition to complete the century sprint in a supercar-like 3.8 seconds.
Both SUVs can also go from zero to 200km/h in less than 14 seconds.
To put that in perspective, 14 seconds is two seconds longer than the average time it takes a regular family saloon to go from rest to 100km/h.
Harnessing this performance are several components. These include the Active M Differential, adaptive M suspension, active roll stabilisation and M compound brakes.
As expected, both the BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition have a rear-wheel bias.
LOOKING THE PART
The BMW X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition will be easily spotted by keen-eyed drivers.
Their unique features include enlarged air intakes, M gills on the fenders, roof spoilers, rear diffusers and quad-tailpipes.
Both models also have staggered wheel sizes. They utilise 21-inch front wheels and 22-inch rear wheels, which complement the rear-wheel bias.
“Track” mode is also specific to the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition. When activated, it lessens the amount of information displayed to the driver. It also reduces the intervention of the various driver-assistance systems.
