BMW Singapore has officially unveiled the updated 4 Series and M4 Competition models here.
The event, which took place at Performance Motors’ showroom along Alexandra Road, showcased the 420i Coupe and 420i Convertible, along with the M4 lineup consists of the M4 Competition Coupe and M4 Competition Convertible.
The latter two, the top models in the lineup, are both equipped with M xDrive (all-wheel-drive).
Compared to the pre-facelift models, the new 4 Series Coupe and Convertible are recognisable for their new head lights that come with chevron-shaped daytime running lights. A single LED module is responsible for generating both low and high-beams.
At the rear, the brand’s LaserLight, which used to be optional, are now standard, which ensures that the taillights stand out. This is the first time that LaserLight technology is being applied to a volume-produced model.
The M4 Competition Coupe and Convertible models have received the same headlamp and taillights upgrades. However, as the range-topping models of the family, the rear also features redesigned BMW and M logos that have a silver surround. Complementing the logos is the new 19-inch forged alloy wheel design that’s available in a silver finish.
In addition, the M4 models can be customised with the M Race Track Package, which reduces weight by up to 25kg thanks to components such as the M Carbon ceramic brakes and M Carbon bucket seats. Buyers seeking to further jazz up the exterior can also specify the optional M design graphics for the bonnet and boot lid.
Inside, the M4’s cockpit features a new steering wheel with a flat-bottom design and a 12 o’clock marker, illuminated air-con vents, and M-specific graphics. The infotainment is now powered by BMW’s Operating System (OS) 8.5, which is more responsive and intuitive than OS 8.
The new 4 Series Coupe and Convertible also benefit from illuminated air vents and OS 8.5. The BMW Maps navigation system now features Augmented View (augmented reality), which makes finding your destination easier than before.
In terms of performance, the 420i Coupe and 420i Convertible are both powered by turbocharged 2.0-litre in-line-four engines that produce 181bhp and 300Nm of torque. However, this time around, the powerplant is paired to a 48-volt mild hybrid system, whose integrated starter generator produces 11hp when moving off the line.
Thus equipped, the 420i Coupe finishes the century sprint in 7.5 seconds, whereas the heavier 420i Convertible does it in 8.2 seconds. For agility, both two-door models have 50-50 weight distribution, and have M Sports suspension and M sport brakes fitted as standard.
As the top-of-the-line models, the M4 Competition Coupe and M4 Competition Convertible are also the most powerful and quickest members of the lineup, but the M division has raised their performance even higher.
The bi-turbo 3-litre straight-6 engine that powers these cars still makes 650Nm of torque, but peak power has risen by 10bhp to 523bhp, courtesy of a modified engine control system. At full tilt, the M4 Coupe does 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds, while the M4 Convertible does it in 3.7 seconds.
M xDrive, which improves traction, can be turned off when DSC is switched off, thus enabling oversteer and even drifting of the M4 models. As seen in previous M models, the M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible continue to have M1 and M2 buttons, which let the driver instantly recall saved configurations for settings such as the gearbox, engine, and suspension.
At time of writing, the 420i M Sport Coupe starts from $309,888, while the Convertible costs $330,888. Meanwhile, the M4 Competition Coupe M xDrive starts from $594,888, whereas the M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive is going for $616,888. All figures are inclusive of COE.
