BMW Asia, along with official agent Performance Motors Limited, have launched the 2 Series Active Tourer and 2 Series Coupe models.
The 2 Series Active Tourer is a compact five-seater MPV (multi-purpose vehicle). Only one drivetrain – the 218i – is available, although the car will come in two variants: Luxury Line and M Sport.
The Luxury Line Launch Edition and M Sport Launch Edition variants will only be available for a limited period.
2 SERIES ACTIVE TOURER: NEW LOOK
Compared to its predecessor, the new 2 Series Active Tourer looks more like a hatchback than an MPV.
Responsible for this are the more steeply raked A-pillars and newly designed door shoulders, stretched window graphic, flush fitting door handles. The latter was first seen on the 4 Series Gran Coupe.
Larger kidney grilles, flanked by slim Adaptive LED headlights with cornering light function, come as standard. Also standard are 18-inch wheels, with 19-inch rims available as an option.
A total of eleven paintwork options, comprising nine metallic and two non-metallic colours, are available for the 2 Series Active Tourer.
TECHNOLOGY AND FLEXIBILITY
Inside, the 2 Series Active Tourer is equipped with BMW’s latest Curved Display, which was introduced on the iX technology flagship SUV. Most of the controls have been placed in here to keep the cockpit neat. A “floating” armrest with an integrated control panel, further helps reduce the number of physical controls.
The Curved Display is powered by BMW’s Operating System 8 (OS 8). It is the first time this system has been implemented in the carmaker’s compact-segment model.
The Curved Display consists of a 10.25-inch control display and a 10.7-inch information display. Like the system in the iX, it also includes BMW Intelligent Assistant, which is activated by saying “Hey BMW”.
Beneath the armrest is a storage compartment, while large cup holders have been placed in the space in front of it. A newly designed smartphone slot helps secure the device with the help of a “bar” to hold it in place. Wireless charging is standard.
With newly developed seats, BMW says that the 2 Series Active Tourer offers passengers “noticeably better long-distance comfort” than its predecessor.
Buyers can further specify sports seats with larger bolsters and shoulder areas, electric seat adjustment and a massage function. The cabin’s four USB-C ports and two 12-volt outlets can help keep devices charged.
To fulfil its role as an MPV, the 2 Series Active Tourer features multi-adjustable, 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats, which can be slid forwards by up to 13cm.
Boot capacity is 470 litres with the rear seats in place, and folding the backrests expands this to 1455 litres. The car is equipped with a power tailgate as standard.
DRIVEABILITY
The 2 Series Active Tourer is claimed to deliver sporting flair with impressive levels of ride comfort. Its body construction shaves weight while increasing rigidity, while the longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks improve stability.
To enhance steering precision, the single-joint spring strut axle in front and the three-link rear axle have been updated. A near-actuator wheel slip limitation function helps improve traction and directional stability.
The 218i Active Tourer M Sport and M Sport Launch Edition models feature adaptive M suspension as standard. This drops the ride height by 15mm and delivers frequency-selective damping and sport steering.
BMW says that the latest Active Tourer has the largest selection of automated driving and parking systems ever offered for its compact-segment model. Cruise Control with brake function, for instance, is part of the standard kit. It now reacts to oncoming traffic during left turns, as well as to pedestrians and cyclists when the driver is turning right.
Parking Assistant, which includes Reversing Assistant and Reversing Assist Camera, is also standard. Options, on the other hand, include Active Navigation, exit warning, BMW Head-Up Display, Remote 3D View and Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go.
