The all-new BMW 4 Series Convertible has officially landed in Singapore.
The latest model is longer and wider than its predecessor. It also eschews the previous generation’s hard-top in favour of a new panel bow soft-top.
Two variants are available from official agent Performance Motors: the 420i Convertible and the more powerful 430i Convertible M Sport Pro. Prices start from $266,888 with COE.
BMW 4 SERIES CONVERTIBLE: GRANDER PROPORTIONS
The new 4 Series Convertible is 128mm longer and 27mm wider than the previous one. Its wheelbase has also been stretched by 41mm, thereby increasing passenger space.
More importantly, the front and rear tracks have been widened by 28mm and 18mm to improve handling. This also gives the topless four-seater a more athletic stance.
Like the 4 Series Coupe, M3 and M4 models, the 4 Series Convertible’s defining design elements are its large kidney grilles. These are flanked by the standard full-LED headlights, which extend into the wheel arches.
Customers can specify Adaptive LED headlights with BMW Laserlight. At speeds above 60km/h, BMW Laserlight can increase the high-beam range up to 550 metres while still following the course of the road.
The new BMW 4 Series Convertible now uses a soft-top instead of folding hard-top. This roof is comprised of large panel bow elements and a flush-fitting glass rear window.
The soft-top is 40 percent lighter than the previous hard-top, and BMW says its acoustic and thermal insulation “are far superior to a conventional soft-top’s.” Both opening and closing take 18 seconds, and the roof can be operated while the car is driven at speeds of up to 50km/h.
SPORTY SURROUNDINGS
Inside, the BMW 4 Series Convertible offers a driver-centric cockpit with a digital instrument cluster and Control Display. The driver and front passenger have sports seats with seat belt feeders that automatically extend and retract as needed.
A high-set centre console and individual-seat designs for the backseats add further enhance the cabin’s sporty feel.
AVAILABLE MODELS
Locally, the BMW 4 Series Convertible comes in 420i and 430i M Sport Pro variants. Both are equipped with convertible-specific bracing for extremely high torsional rigidity.
Specifically, the car’s static torsional rigidity is four percent higher than its predecessor’s.
Both the 420i and 430i promise dynamic handling thanks to their respective suspension setups. The former features M Sport suspension, while the latter has Adaptive M suspension – which comes with electronically controlled dampers – as standard.
Also standard on the 430i Convertible are more powerful M Sport brakes (optional on the 420i Convertible) with red callipers. They can be specified with blue callipers as an option.
Drivers who opt for the 430i can specify the optional electronically controlled, fully variable locking rear differential as well. Both the 420i and 430i are powered by turbocharged 2-litre inline-4 engines paired to 8-speed automatic gearboxes.
