Audi Singapore has unveiled the all-new A3 Sedan and A3 Sportback.
Apart from their compact and sporty proportions, both cars are equipped with the German brand’s latest connectivity and safety features.
The A3 Sedan and A3 Sportback are both powered by turbocharged 1.5-litre engines with 48-volt mild hybrid systems. Prices currently start from $166,140 with COE.
AUDI A3 SEDAN AND A3 SPORTBACK: DESIGN
The A3 Sedan and A3 Sportback look particularly sporty, thanks to their quattro blisters and muscular lines.
Both cars feature the brand’s Singleframe with honeycomb grille. Behind the Singleframe are two electrically controlled louvre modules that regulate the airflow according to driving conditions, thereby helping improve efficiency.
Indeed, both models are more aerodynamic than before, with their Cd (coefficient of drag) improving by 0.02. Other components, such as the panelled underbody and active brake cooling also help lower air resistance.
The Audi A3 Sedan is just over 15cm longer than the A3 Sportback. To emphasise this, its body line extends all the way to its rear bumper. Audi says this gives the Sedan’s flanks an elegant appearance.
TECH AND DRIVER-CENTRIC
The A3 Sedan and Sportback models are more high-tech and driver-focussed than before.
Audi’s 12.1-inch virtual cockpit plus instrument cluster, which offers three different layouts, is standard, along with a 10.1-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system. The latter is angled towards the driver for convenience.
Other standard functions include handwriting recognition, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The driver can also remain connected to the car through the myAudi app. (Download the Android version here.)
Up to six drivers can use the app to store their personal settings for functions such as the seats, climate and media.
With regard to practicality, the Audi A3 Sedan offers a boot volume of 425 litres, same as the previous model. Meanwhile, the more versatile A3 Sportback has a boot capacity of 380 litres with the rear seats up. This expands to 1200 litres when the backseats are folded.
Speaking of seats, the A3 Sedan and Sportback can be optionally specified with seat upholstery made from recycled materials. Up to 89 percent of the textile used here is made from recycled PET bottles.
AUDI A3 SEDAN AND A3 SPORTBACK: DRIVETRAIN
Both Sedan and Sportback models utilise turbocharged 1.5-litre inline-4 engines paired to 7-speed S tronic (dual-clutch) transmissions. The motor produces 148hp (110kW, 150PS) and 250Nm.
This powerplant is also the first 4-cylinder one from Audi that is equipped with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Previously, the 4-cylinder engines had 12-volt mild hybrids.
The mild hybrid recovers energy during deceleration and supports the engine with up to 50Nm of torque when accelerating from low speeds. It also enables the car to coast with the engine switched off.
Audi says the 48-volt system can save up to 0.4 litres of petrol for every 100km driven.
