If you ever thought, boy, I want a hatchback but also really want others to think I offroad, the Audi A1 Citycarver is your weapon of choice.
As an urban supermini-slash-softroader, it’s a car that answers a question nobody really had.
Nevertheless, it exists, so let’s take a look at it in case one of you really wants one.
What is the Audi A1 Citycarver?
Audi considers the A1 Citycarver its “most progressive” model, and in many ways it is, looking quite a handsome thing with its macho styling that fits its target buyer base – millennials.
As Audi would like to have you think, it’s probably for carving up the streets, swinging along boulevards and tearing up dirt tracks with equal aplomb.
In reality, it’s a jacked-up Audi A1 Sportback that good on “slightly rough terrain” (Audi’s words, not ours).
In fairness though, the A1 Citycarver’s got some actual stuff underneath that justifies its muscly look.
For one, it’s got a 35mm higher ride height coupled with undercarriage armouring in case you need to clear some grass rocks.
In front, the A1 Citycarver has two large slots that differentiates it from the Sportback’s single but slimmer slot, and there’s a redesigned rear bumper too.
Also, it gets 16-inch wheels as standard.
Externally, you can choose from nine different colours and available contrasting roof colours.
What else?
Aside from that, the A1 Citycarver gets the Advanced, Design selection and S line trim lines.
The S line trim level gives you the choice between seat covers in cloth/synthetic leather or Alcantara/synthetic leather.
The interior design selection includes the contour/ambient lighting package.
The A1 Citycarver, like the A1 Sportback it’s based on, gets an identical 335 litres of luggage space.
The same applies with respect to the standard and optional equipment, including full-LED headlights with dynamic rear turn signals.
The assist systems, which include adaptive cruise control and park assist, are taken wholesale from larger Audis, while the pre-sense front (pedestrian and cyclist detection) and lane departure warning are standard on the Citycarver.
Handling-wise, the A1 Citycarver gets an optional Dynamic package, which includes brake discs with sporty red calipers, the Audi drive select dynamic handling system, a sound actuator and a suspension with adjustable dampers.
Audi drive select is also available separately, as are 18-inch wheels.
