We’ve all seen snow foam being used at petrol kiosks and by professional detailers.
But how useful is this product?
And is it necessary even if you’re going to use a dedicated car shampoo?
WHAT DETAILERS SAY
Snow foam is a necessary first step prior to actual contact washing.
It is sprayed on the vehicle surface and allowed to sit there to loosen dirt and grime.
Then, the foam is rinsed off, along with some of the contaminants.

The car is then washed using a dedicated car shampoo, using a two-bucket method.
Doing this greatly reduces the risk of scratching the paintwork and causing swirl marks.
CAN SNOW FOAM BE USED LIKE CAR SHAMPOO? IS IT SAFE?
Since petrol kiosk car washes do this, yes, it is possible.
“Safe” in this context refers to the risk of scratching your car.
This depends on a few factors.
Firstly, how dirty is the vehicle?
If it hasn’t been washed in weeks (or months), it probably isn’t very safe.
Secondly, the wash mitts being used have to be clean.
If they haven’t been washed, then no matter how good the snow foam is, you will scratch your car.
HOW LONG SHOULD SNOW FOAM STAY ON THE VEHICLE?
Generally, most detailers say that it should be as long as possible without drying.
Remember, leaving it on too long could cause water spots.
HOW CAN I USE IT ON MY CAR?
You’ll need a pressure washer and something called a foam lance or foam cannon.
Foam lances/cannons are bottles that you fill with snow foam.
They are attached to the pressure washer.
When you spray your car, the water mixes with the product and presto!
Your car is blanketed in white foam.
