“For the sport of it.”
A tagline so simple, yet it fully covers the essence of the Porsche 718 Cayman.
Inspired by the original Porsche 718 racecar which was created in 1957 to tackle Formula 1 and 2 as well the legendary Le Mans and Targa Florio races (it achieved three overall victories in the latter), the 718 Cayman embraces the race machine’s sleek, low-slung good looks, sporty spirit and famed handling prowess.
The latest Porsche 718 Cayman is an everyday sports car that you can drive in ample comfort. It seats two with ease and stows up to 422 litres of luggage, thanks to front and rear compartments.
With Porsche Communication Management (PCM) including mobile phone preparation, audio interface and multi-touch gesture control, you will always be connected and entertained.
At the same time, the 718 Cayman is capable of out-hustling almost anything on four wheels on a winding stretch of asphalt.
HEART OF A CHAMPION
Propelled by a mid-mounted 2-litre flat-4 engine, the latest 718 Cayman has 300PS on tap. More importantly, turbocharging has also increased its torque output to 380Nm, which is available from just 1950rpm.
What this means is this – just by prodding the throttle, you will be revelling in maximum torque in mere seconds, and this does not abate until almost 4500rpm. Bursts of speed are its forte and this is useful in traversing city traffic as well as overtaking on the highway.
Put pedal to the metal and the Porsche 718 Cayman accomplishes the zero to 100km/h dash in 4.7 seconds (with Sport Chrono Package) and on to a top speed of 275km/h.
A portion of this prodigious performance can be attributed to the 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (Porsche-speak for dual-clutch gearbox) which transfers drive with optimum efficiency to the rear wheels.
Speaking of efficiency, the 718 Cayman delivers a combined fuel consumption figure of 7.0L/100km, along with a reduction in emissions.
CARVING UP CURVY ROADS
Making a car fast in a straight line is all down to producing as much power and torque as possible. Accomplishing the same feat, but on roads filled with myriad twists and turns, requires much more.
Porsche engineers have completely reworked the chassis of the 718 Cayman to enhance precision and lateral stability, while 19-inch Boxster S wheels, with 235/40 R19 (front) and 265/40 R19 (rear) tyres ensure excellent grip in all road conditions.
Amazingly, ride comfort has also improved. The electromechanical steering (10 percent more direct than the previous model) makes control of the two-seater sports car easier and more agile – thanks to the steering system which incorporates the steering gear from the 911 Turbo.
PORSCHE 718 CAYMAN: CUSTOMISED PERFORMANCE
The Porsche 718 Cayman with its standard features is already a real joy to drive. However, you can choose to sweeten the ownership experience even more with options.
The optional multifunctional GT Sports steering wheel and Sport Chrono Package including mode switch and SPORT response button guarantees maximum responsiveness.
Depress the latter and the PDK immediately downshifts to a lower gear. For 20 seconds, it also adopts a shift map that is even more aggressive than in Sport Plus mode.
Select the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports chassis, with 10-mm lower ride height and delight in the improved handling.
The Porsche 718 Cayman is imbued with the sporty spirit of the 718 racecar that has achieved numerous wins and podium placings in the past.
Borne of Porsche’s motorsports know-how and engineering prowess, it is a purebred mid-engine sports car which provides endless thrills – no matter which road you take.
