There’s an urban legend that Creative Technology, Singapore’s homegrown “Orange” rival to Apple, created a car of sorts to showcase its world-class electronic wizardry. This was over 30 years ago when Orchard Road had Centrepoint Kids.
After its job was done, the vehicle was parked in a corner of Creative HQ’s basement carpark and placed under a silver cover, never to see the light of day again.
I once took a peek under the sheet, thanks to a friend who used to work there as a product developer. I only saw one side of the Creative car and it looked run-down. If I remember correctly, it was a coupe with just two seats and a simple steering wheel. Apparently, it didn’t have an engine, although I believe the talented Sim Wong Hoo (Creative’s head honcho) could have made a motor from a couple of Sound Blaster cards, some plasticine and a few AA batteries.
