Recently, a warning message appeared in my instrument panel. It said “Runflat Indicator Inoperative”. That was all it took to cripple my daily routine that day, until I finally checked my car into the service centre. As expected, the technician said there was nothing wrong with my tyres, just some sensor malfunction. So, in actual fact, the thing that was supposed to pick out the fault turned out to be the fault itself.
How did I allow myself to be ruled by a machine? Can I really, truly and absolutely place my faith in it? Do we really need every feature/gadget dished out by car manufacturers? Is it fast becoming a case of having everything we need plus too much of what we don’t need?
Air-conditioned seats. Digital climate control with half-degree temperature adjustments. Trip computer that calculates fuel consumption and presents the data in one of several ways, either metric or imperial. Automatic adjustment of the audio volume depending on the vehicle’s speed. Automated/assisted “handsfree” parking.
I can park my car myself, thank you very much.
