This minimalist language is carried through to its interior design. Everything is where it should be; nothing more, nothing less. The controls, instruments, shift lever and steering wheel are ergonomically and intuitively positioned relative to the driver.
Even for someone who is getting into the CX-5 or a Mazda for the first time, it takes no time at all to get acquainted and comfortable. This is the magic of Mazda’s Human-Machine Interface (HMI) at work.
The human-centric design philosophy also manifests itself in features such as the Active Driving Display, which prioritises the driving information that is projected onto the head-up display.
The CX-5’s infotainment system, MZD Connect, keeps me entertained and connected on the go. Said system is accessible via a seven-inch display that functions as a touchscreen while the car is stationary and controlled via a rotary commander when in motion.
Nothing fazes me more than complicated infotainment interfaces. The fact that I could navigate the MZD Connect menus with ease on my first attempt is testimony to their user-friendliness.
Particularly enjoyable was the multi-sensory experience that the CX-5 cabin offered. The sophisticated design, top-notch finishing and refined appearance were a visual treat.
The 10-speaker Bose premium audio system that is available with the 2.5 Super Luxury variant catered to my audio pleasure. Soft-touch materials with a handmade feel added a tactile appeal. Form and function all come together to create a luxurious and pampering experience that cocoons its occupants from the hustle and bustle outside.
I sometimes struggle to find a comfortable driving position in some SUVs because the seating position is either too upright or because my ankles are contorted into an awkward angle. In the CX-5, the driving position was relaxing, the ride height just right, while the well-positioned pedals will definitely keep the podiatrist at bay.
If you’re a mum like me, you will appreciate the importance of ensuring the comfort of our little passengers in the rear. The CX-5’s rear cabin received multiple stamps of approval from my seven-year-old for seats that can recline up to 28 degrees, thanks to the generous legroom, the backseat’s two-step reclining mechanism and rear air-conditioning vents.
