Kia is resetting expectations once again with the reveal of the all new K5 sedan.
The new Kia K5 celebrates this new chapter in the firm’s story with its new name, a revolutionary design, as well as as newfound safety and performance.
BOLD NEW DESIGN
The centerpiece of the K5 is Kia’s modernised “tiger face”, with the wide and thin front grille extending into the headlight and bonnet structure.
From the side, the Kia K5’s low-slung and fastback silhouette gives the impression that it was made to run. This is highlighted by a chrome garnish that spans the roofline and wraps around the rear glass.
High-spec models in the U.S.A will get chrome exhaust tips at the rear.
At the rear, high-spec models in the U.S.A will also get dual chrome exhaust tips, while a gloss black applique on the rear glass enhances the fastback shape while maintaining sedan functionality and cargo space.
NEW HANDLING PROWESS
The new Kia K5 sits on the advanced third-generation “N3” platform, which will serve as the foundation for future Kia models.
The platform allows the K5 to sit longer, lower and wider compared to its predecessor, resulting in its aggressive profile and deeper centre of gravity for a more exciting driving experience.
Kia claims the K5 has suspension geometry optimised for sporty handling, responsiveness and stability. Meanwhile, the use of improved sound deadening materials has also resulted in a quieter and more refined cabin.
NEW TURBOCHARGED POWER
Two engine choices are available in the U.S, a 286bhp 2.5-litre, and a 178bhp 1.6-litre unit.
The U.S market Kia K5 is available with two drivetrain options. The first is a turbocharged 2.5-litre 4-cylinder unit making 286bhp and 422Nm of torque.
This engine is paired with an 8-speed dual clutch transmission to give the car a zero to 96km/h sprint time of 5.8 seconds.
The second option is a turbocharged 1.6-litre 4-cylinder producing 178bhp and 264Nm of torque. This engine is paired with an all new 8-speed automatic transmission.
ADVANCED CONNECTIVITY FEATURES
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are making an appearance on this new K5.
The interior of the Kia K5 sports new wireless features to minimise cord clutter and keep the cockpit clean, while a seamless infotainment display layout and voice command system help keep the driver’s eyes on the road.
U.S. market models will get either an 8-inch or a 10.25-inch high-resolution colour touchscreen, while a Bose Premium sound system is also available with 12 high-performance speakers.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto also make an appearance on the K5, while a new natural language voice recognition software will be able to recognise a number of naturally spoken commands.
The Kia K5 is also set to receive the “Kia Drive Wise” suite of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems, whose functions include Forward Collision Warning and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, as well as Lane Following Assist.
