Lexus has taken the wraps off its LC500 Convertible, the topless sibling of the LC500 Coupe. Like other Lexus models, the LC500 Convertible has a huge spindle grille and a pair of aggressive-looking headlights. Sitting low and wide, the car has an athletic stance, too.
INTERIOR APPOINTMENTS
To enhance occupant comfort, the Lexus LC500 Convertible has unique features such as Active Noise Control and Climate Concierge. The former complements the sound insulation, while the latter automatically adjusts the air-con throughput and warming functions, too.
Said warmers include the neck heaters in the front seats, plus the steering wheel and seat heaters. Climate Concierge is designed to work regardless of whether the roof is open or closed.
The Lexus LC500 Convertible has a four-layer soft top whose supporting frame is hidden from sight. The roof opens in 15 seconds and closes in 16 seconds. It can be operated while the car is being driven at up to 50km/h.
To keep hairdos from being totally ruined, the driver can deploy a polycarbonate draught stopper.
UNIQUE DRIVETRAIN
Unlike many cars today with turbocharged engines, the Lexus LC500 Convertible has a naturally aspirated 5-litre V8. This engine is paired to a 10-speed automatic gearbox.
No performance figures are available yet. But based on its coupe sibling, which does the century sprint in 4.7 seconds, the Convertible should manage it in under 6 seconds.
We estimate the slower timing to be due to the car’s increased weight, as a result of additional structural bracing.
STRIKING SOUNDS?
Lexus says the LC500 will have an exhaust valve that enhances the V8 motor’s soundtrack. It is likely to be a bypass valve that opens once the engine is revved past a certain point.
When the top is closed, a sound generator will transmit the soundtrack through the dash panel.
SINGAPORE LAUNCH
Lexus Singapore says the car will arrive “sometime in 2020”. With the Coupe currently priced at $548,800, the Convertible will probably cost around $600,000.
