The first pure EV from German automaker Volkswagen is here, in the form of the ID.3.
A Golf-sized hatchback, the ID.3 is the vanguard in VW’s grand strategy to become the “number one brand” globally by 2025.
“With the ID.3, we are starting from the centre, the Volkswagen brand’s core, in which the majority of the models and sales volume can be found.
“The number 3 also signals expandability into the segments above and below it. We have a lot in the pipeline,” said Jürgen Stackmann, member of VW’s board for sales, marketing and after sales.
To VW, the ID.3 is a milestone, and the company has reflected that in the name.
The “3” in ID3 reflects the “third major chapter” in the brand’s history, after the Beetle and the Golf.
The “ID”, meanwhile, has a couple of meanings.
For starters, it identifies the car as a member of Volkswagen’s ID. family, which is a new, independent series of EVs.
VW will produce some 20 vehicles under this ID. brand, all purely electric, networked and emission-free.
In marketing terms, ID. also stands for intelligent design, identity and visionary technologies.
Aside from the ID.3, Volkswagen will roll out models previewed by the ID.Cross, ID.Vizzion, ID.Roomzz.
The ID.3 is available for pre-order in Europe as of this writing, with further availability to be confirmed.
