Successful models are a tough act to follow.
In the case of the Volvo XC60, the first-generation model was such a huge hit that it made up about one-third of Volvo’s global sales.
It may be a lot to live up to, but the all-new, second-generation Volvo XC60 definitely has what it takes to supersede its predecessor.
The all-new Volvo XC60 will win you over the moment you lay eyes on it, for its styling is an attractive blend of elegance and sportiness. Elements such as a steeply raked front windscreen, coupe-like windows and a curvy tailgate are all part of this SUV’s charm.
The charm offensive continues the moment you enter the XC60 and settle into the supremely comfortable driver’s seat.
The cockpit’s design is clearly Scandinavian, with clean lines and a lower than expected dashboard that improves forward visibility. There are very few buttons in here, for most of the functions are accessed via Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system.
Using the brilliant touchscreen display, drivers can control music, navigation and various car settings. It’s all very intuitive, and you’ll feel like you’re doing this on your own tablet.
Speaking of tablets, the XC60 offers generous storage points for mobile phones and other personal effects, and has a well-shaped 505-litre boot that’s ideal for bulky items and flat-pack furniture.
Volvo hasn’t just focussed on the XC60’s design and interior, though. It has also paid close attention to how the SUV drives.
Despite measuring 4688mm long and having a wheelbase length of 2865mm, the XC60 is surprisingly nimble and feels no larger than a hatchback.
This agility is a perfect complement to the XC60’s performance, especially on the range-topping T6 variant. Equipped with a turbocharged and supercharged 2-litre engine that delivers 320hp and 400Nm, the XC60 T6 crosses the century mark in just 5.9 seconds.
For the less keen, there’s an XC60 T5 variant with 254hp and 350Nm. But it’s no slouch either, and clocks a respectable zero to 100km/h time of 6.8 seconds.
The best part about the XC60, however, is the fact that it’s one of the safest crossovers available today.
A suite of standard safety features, which include Lane Keeping Aid, City Safety With Steering Support, Oncoming Lane Alert and Road Sign Information, are just some of the numerous advanced technologies on-board.
With its beautiful design, elegant interior and athletic abilities, the Volvo XC60 really is one sweet Swede SUV.
