Even on the briefest of glances, it’s obvious that the owner of this Volkwagen Scirocco, K (along with the talented installers and mechanics who worked on it) has spent an inordinate amount of effort on his car, and it’s paid off. It left the judges at the recent EMMA Singapore Championships so impressed, they awarded second place in the Racing Advanced class to K’s car.
Unlike “traditional” EMMA competitions that rate competitors on the quality of their ICE systems, the Racing category places as much emphasis on the vehicle’s aesthetic and performance mods.
It goes without saying then, that to wow the jurors, a car competing there must not only sound like a million dollars, it must also look the part. Even to our relatively untrained eyes and ears, K’s serpent-themed ride, dubbed Deadly Venom scores big in all areas. K was inspired to go down this route by what he says is the Scirocco’s serpentine silhouette.
If its matte-gold paintwork (yes, it’s paint, not a wrap), custom Rieger bodykit and Oxigin Panther 19-inch wheels aren’t eye-catching enough, it’s positively breathtaking on the inside, which features a fully customised interior by Nightz Conceptz.
This Scirocco’s interior has snakeskin-print leather upholstery and LED-backlit door cards bearing a snake-scales motif, with the theme also extending to the headliner. While the customisation is impressive from a distance, get a little closer (actually, quite a lot closer) and you’ll discover the exquisite stitching holding the snakeskin upholstery and LED light “pipes” together. Other mods include a Ksport air suspension kit that allows K to let his Scirocco mimic its animal inspiration with a “snake’s belly” stance.
Given its good showing in the EMMA competition, it should come as no surprise that this Scirocco has an equally impressive ICE system (installed and tuned by Alquest Sound Dynamics).
Its entire boot is taken up by a Rockford Fosgate Punch P2-D4 12-inch subwoofer, a bank of Mercury Maestro tube amplifiers and an air tank that supplies the aforementioned Ksport suspension system. Those Mercury amplifiers are hooked up to a Mosconi DSP, which in turn feeds a set of Mercury Kristal speakers.
Keeping all that quality audio output where it belongs and keeping it “pure” is a full complement of STP soundproofing mats. As for how it sounds? Well, let’s just say that this award-winning car delivers the goods there as well.
Needless to say, this Scirocco, like Rome, wasn’t built in a day. According to K, his car’s interior alone took nearly eight months to complete, and what you see here is the result of some two years’ worth of work.
Much of that time was also spent on planning – something K says is essential to avoid the end product looking incoherent and, as he puts it, “like rojak”. It helps, then, that K is no newbie to the scene – his previous car, a Suzuki Swift (which he very reluctantly sold off several years prior) also won a few accolades in its time.
However, K is far from done. To get his Scirocco looking the way he really wants it to, he says he’ll need another five years, with the next big task being to customise his ride’s engine bay and then, to enter Deadly Venom in regional competitions.
Clearly, K is extremely proud of his Scirocco, but as he says with a wry smile, “There’s more to come”. Given how good his car looks already, that sounds like a hugely tantalising prospect.
