I’m going to have to disagree with what David said on Monday. It’s impossible for a van, no matter how stylishly designed, can help you look good.
Being a workman’s tool, a van’s form is dictated by its function, which necessarily means a boxy profile with plenty of right angles and none of this “coupe-like roofline” rubbish.
The closest a van came to helping its occupants look good is when the A-Team used a GMC Vandura as its mode of conveyance.
But despite all that, a van is a great car to drive. I usually have a whale of a time driving one, and when I drove a VW Caddy Maxi for a couple of days last week was no exception.
Now, you might be wondering why I like a vehicle that makes me look like I’m permanently on the way to making a delivery.
Yes, there is how a van is monstrously practical, but the thing I like most about the breed is how honest they are. Most cars these days try to be something else. Small cars, and small luxury cars in partcular always try to ape their bigger brethren. And don’t get me started on how some SUVs are contriving to behave like sports cars.
A van is none of those things. It’s simply a vehicle built to ferry good around and it shows in its personality. I’m not sure about you, but to me, that is a very good thing indeed.
