The newest generation of Daimler’s Smart microcar has hit the streets of continental Europe as the two-door/seat Fortwo and four-door/seat Forfour.
Juice for the funky runabouts is provided by a rear-mounted 999cc 3-cylinder in one of three states of tune (naturally aspirated 60bhp or 71bhp, and turbocharged 90bhp), with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or 6-speed dual-clutch automatic called Twinamic.
The fresh Fortwo is tiny in more ways than one – its 6.95m turning circle, which is even smaller than that of a London Cab, is believed to be a new benchmark. The exterior and interior of the Smarts are designed to put the “fun” in functionality. Evidence of this includes the stylishly integrated Tridion safety cell, minimal dimensions with maximal roominess, and the loveable yet practical cabin.
Three equipment lines (Passion, Prime, Proxy) and a happy variety of optional goodies, including a solid JBL hi-fi system, give the urbanite plenty to consider. There’s also a Smart app for his/her smartphone.
Sadly, there won’t be newly minted street-Smart drivers in Singapore, because the latest Fortwo and Forfour won’t be imported here, at least not through the official Daimler channel.
