The early morning thunderstorms these past few days caused many traffic jams. Like many motorists, I was not only stuck in a jam ‒ I had no alternate routes available either. Unbelievably, all the other routes from my home in Pasir Ris to our office in Genting Lane were also severely congested due to vehicle breakdowns and/or accidents.
The boredom of being stuck in a jam, however, got me thinking about how I could pass the time. Apart from checking Facebook or playing games on your smartphone, here are a few things drivers and passengers can do if (and only if) traffic comes to an absolute standstill.
Watch Movies
Watching humorous clips of your favourite movie scenes is a sure way of reducing stress levels. If your car’s infotainment system has a DVD player, now would be a great time to use that, too. Hopefully, you’ve got something more fun than Barney & Friends in your vehicle.
Plan Your Next Holiday
Think about where you’d want to go for your next vacation. You can start factoring in how many days of leave you’ll need, who can cover for you, etc. The nice thing about doing this is imagining that you’re anywhere else but stuck in a jam.
Karaoke Session
If you enjoy singing, now’s the time to start practicing for that next KTV session with your friends. Sing along with your favourite tunes on the radio, or if one of your passengers has a karaoke app, you can use that as well.
Listen To Podcasts
Or if podcasts aren’t your thing, you could give audio books a try. Having a book read to you can be surprisingly soothing.
Swap Stories
Sometimes, the best entertainment during times like these is catching up with family members who are in the vehicle with you. We’re all so busy keeping up with work that we don’t get the chance to have meaningful conversations with our parents and siblings ‒ being stuck together in a car provides an opportunity for everyone to catch up!
