Athough aware of the space constraints in Singapore, many local drivers still aspire to own SUVs, which offer plenty of room and a commanding view of the road. Perhaps due to our island’s limited size, the SUV’s stature subconsciously appeals to those who want to have more road at any given time.
Still looking fresh from its launch nearly three years ago, the RX350 remains the most popular luxury SUV sold here. Lexus knew that since the majority of SUV owners would never see more than a grassy patch, their smooth “soft-roader” was going to be a surefire hit.
Taking a fresh stab at the segment is the second-generation Touareg, which hit our streets in late 2010. Now looking sharper and weighing considerably less than its predecessor, yet still equipped with genuine off-road credentials, the new Touareg aims to dominate its rivals.
The Mercedes-Benz ML350, which debuted in 2006, may be the oldest of the trio, but its tremendous road presence and rugged feel continue to offer real character. A facelift two years ago has kept the mid-sized SUV somewhat fresh, but it will have to fight hard against newer rivals until its replacement finally arrives.
Each of these SUVs has a unique personality, but which of them best suits the civilised Tarzan in a concrete jungle? Read on to find out.

RX350 – Most refined of the group with its cushy seats and soft plastics. Thoughtful touches include an “Easy Entry/Exit” system and a tray under the centre console with a 12V socket.

ML350 – Best suited to ?off-roading, thanks to grab rails along the centre console and grippy leather/Alcantara seats. The only one equipped with a conventional ignition keyhole.

TOUAREG – Cockpit feels the roomiest and offers excellent forward visibility. Front passenger seat ?is the only one equipped with memory function. Door pockets ?are wide, but not very deep.
