I have just revalidated the COE on my Honda. The car is in good condition, but I am worried about the Takata airbag issue as I have not yet been informed about any recall. I bought the car from a parallel importer, which is no longer in business. What should I do?
More than a dozen people have been killed worldwide by defective airbags supplied by Japanese components maker Takata and many more injured.
So you have reason to be concerned.
As of June, it was estimated that 80,000 cars affected by this potentially fatal defect are still on the road. That translates to around one in eight cars here.
The authorities will not confirm the figure, but indicated that the majority of vehicles due for a recall have not yet been recalled.
In a statement to The Straits Times, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) says vehicle owners can check if their vehicle is affected by a recall online.
Go to www.onemotoring.com.sg and search “vehicle recall”. Then click Electronic Vehicle Recall System. There, you can check if your car is affected by a campaign. You can also access a list of recall campaigns in the last six months.
An LTA spokesman says owners “can also contact LTA for assistance”.
“Should a parallel importer be no longer in business, the LTA will assist to link the owners with other dealers or parallel importers.
